The NFL on Friday released a statement indicating all necessary steps were taken Thursday night in regard to evaluating Cam Newton for a potential concussion after the MVP absorbed numerous helmet-to-helmet blows, seemingly withhout being tested for a brain injury.

On Sunday, the NFL released a statement saying it's launching a separate investigation to ensure all necessary protocol was followed within medical response to Newton.

"The NFL is committed to the proper application of the concussion protocol," NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy said in a statement. "In order to ensure that it is being applied across all 32 teams, we have decided to initiate a review of the medical team's response to the Cam Newton tackle, under the procedure set forth by the collective bargaining agreement.
