Matthew Stafford benched for poor play against Cardinals

Detroit Lions head coach Jim Caldwell benched quarterback Matthew Stafford midway through the third quarter losing by a score of 35-7 in Week 5 against the Arizona Cardinals.

Stafford was having trouble all game long connecting with his receivers downfield and had made some bad mistakes. When he left the game, the veteran had completed 20-of-32 passes for just 188 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions.

It was a miserable performance, and the final straw was broken, it appeared, when Stafford and receiver Golden Tate had words in the huddle.
