Lions trade up and pick Stanford cornerback Alex Carter

AP

After trading down in the first round, the Lions have traded up in the third.

Detroit moved up to the 80th overall pick and selected Stanford cornerback Alex Carter.

The Lions gave up their third-round pick (No. 88 overall), as well as the 143rd overall pick, which was a fifth-round pick they got from the Broncos yesterday, to acquire the No. 80 pick.

Detroit wanted to bolster the cornerback position and has now done so, with a player who can add some depth behind starters Darius Slay and Rashean Mathis.
