The Lions are adding much-needed help to the backfield.
Former Vikings running back Matt Asiata has agreed to a one-year deal, NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported, per a source.
Asiata was signed by Minnesota as an undrafted free agent in 2012. In five seasons, he rushed for 1,259 yards on 361 carries and 18 touchdowns.
Asiata should be a nice addition to Detroit's struggling rushing game. The Lions finished No. 30 in the NFL in rushing yards last season. He will compete with Zach Zenner and Dwayne Washington for a roster spot behind Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick.
