Hub Arkush: NFL TV ratings are down, but should it be a major concern?

There is no bigger event or moneymaker on network television than the National Football League in prime time, but three weeks into the 2016 season there are early reports that trend could be changing.

I for one cannot wait for this Sunday’s prime-time matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and Pittsburgh Steelers featured on our cover this week, but I am apparently part of a slightly smaller group than we’ve been in recent seasons.

According to the folks who measure the ratings and viewership of NFL games, the numbers are down year-over-year so far in 2016.

Total viewers for the Sunday afternoon national broadcast of Giants-Cowboys were actually up 18 percent Week One of this season, but were down 21 percent Week Two and down one percent in Week Three.
