Cardell Hayes was found guilty of manslaughter of former New Orleans Saints player Will Smith and attempted manslaughter for Smith's wife, Racquel -- two lesser charges than 2nd degree murder and attempted second degree murder charges.
The manslaughter charge carries up to 40 years and up to 20 years for the attempted manslaughter charge.
The sentencing will be determined by a judge at a later date.
The shooting happened the night of April 9 after a car crash in New Orleans. Hayes claimed he fired only after an irate and drunken Smith punched him and then retrieved a gun from his damaged SUV.
