EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Since the Fourth of July fireworks accident that resulted in the amputation of Jason Pierre-Paul’s right index finger, nothing about the interaction between the Giants and Pierre-Paul, their best defensive player, has been orthodox. Shortly after the accident, he turned away team officials who arrived at his hospital in Florida. The Giants later withdrew a $60 million contract offer.
Still tethered to the team, if not contractually bound to it, Pierre-Paul continued to leave the Giants in the dark.
“I don’t know how many fingers he has,” John Mara, a Giants co-owner, said in exasperation as training camp opened.
