Of all the quarterbacks in the high-profile 2012 draft class, the first to get a long-term extension beyond his rookie contract may be Ryan Tannehill.
The Dolphins are hoping to get a contract extension with Tannehill done this offseason, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
There’s no reason that a deal has to get done soon. Tannehill’s rookie deal gives him an extremely affordable base salary of $660,000 this year, and then the Dolphins will pick up his $16 million fifth-year option next year. He’s under contract for two more years.
But the Dolphins would surely love to work out a deal that lowers Tannehill’s 2016 cap number.
