Conduct of coaches questioned in Texas referee incident

ROUND ROCK, Texas (AP) — High school sports officials in Texas are questioning whether the coaches of two players accused of intentionally hitting a referee should have done more to calm emotions in what had been a tense game.

Executive board members of the University Interscholastic League held a public hearing Wednesday on the incident from last Friday when two San Antonio Jay High School players blindsided the game umpire. The incident has drawn national attention.

Board members called it an embarrassment for the state that will not be tolerated. Committee members directed local school officials to investigate whether Jay High School has a culture of unsportsmanlike conduct.
