Bill Arnsparger, the architect of the unheralded No Name Defense that propelled the Miami Dolphins of the early 1970s to the only unbeaten and untied season in N.F.L. history and two consecutive Super Bowl championships, died on Friday at his home in Athens, Ala. He was 88. His death was announced on the Dolphins’ website.
Giants fans of a certain age will remember Arnsparger for his two-plus losing seasons as head coach in the 1970s. But he gained renown throughout the N.F.L. as an innovative defensive coordinator, spurring the Baltimore Colts, the Miami Dolphins and the San Diego Chargers to six Super Bowls.
