As explained by Ben Volin of the Boston Globe, one incident to which Patriots fans regularly point wasn’t a big deal at all.
It was 2012, and the Chargers found themselves under investigation for using a towel that was sticky. But the towel didn’t contained a banned substance; the towel itself — known as “Gorilla Gold” — had a grip-enhancing quality in the material.
