The NFL season is nearly over, with just the Super Bowl left. For the 30 teams that are not still playing, the focus has turned to the offseason. Free agency and the NFL Draft are the main priorities, especially with the Senior Bowl already underway. With that in mind, we've compiled the most interesting tidbits from around the NFL as the draft approaches.
Browns Targeting Wentz At #2?
North Dakota State quarterback Carson Wentz is the darling of the early pre-draft process, with his size, mobility and overall field smarts leading many analysts to vault him to the top of their quarterback rankings.
Per WalterFootball.com, the Cleveland Browns are “extremely high” on Wentz as they put together their board for the #2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft. If Wentz continues to wow scouts in Senior Bowl practices and follows it up with a good run of showcases before April 28th, the Browns may very well tab him as their long-term franchise quarterback.
Speaking Of Wentz...
Although Tyrod Taylor is the here and now for the Buffalo Bills at quarterback, franchise officials have been keeping a very close eye on Wentz even before this offseason -- leading to speculation that Buffalo may look to trade up into the top ten or so to bring him into the fold.
"I was just talking to one of our video coordinators and I said, 'What teams would you think?' And one of the teams that was here the most was the Bills. They've been in our building quite a bit and in our practices," Wentz's quarterbacks coach, Randy Hedberg, said when asked by reporters which teams has been showing the most interest in the 6-foot-5 pro-style signal caller.
While intrigue and interest doesn't always equate to trading up in the draft, the Bills may be smitten enough with Wentz's skill set to justify giving up the pick package necessary to move up and grab him.
Seahawks Looking At Ohio State CB For #26 Pick?
ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has the Seahawks taking Ohio State CB Eli Apple with their first-round selection in April's draft, and colleague Sheil Kapadia says such a move is a very real possibility"
"Official measurements will come in at the combine next month, but NFL.com has him listed at 6-foot-1, 200 pound with long arms, so Apple would fit the physical dimensions the Seahawks look for in their cornerbacks.
"Apple was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2015 and was named Ohio State's defensive MVP during its win over Notre Dame in the Fiesta Bowl. He had four interceptions and 17 pass breakups in 27 games.
"Apple will be a player to keep an eye on in the months ahead."
