The Philadelphia Eagles traded QB Nick Foles to the Los Angeles Rams last season, and Foles was just awful when he played. The Rams actually benched Foles in favor of Case Keenum and the offense was much more efficient. It seems unlikely Foles will return as the starter next season, and Ian Rapoport says at least three NFL teams are interested in trading for Foles if the Rams elect to move him. Foles showed promise early in his career with the Eagles, but regressed each year after a strong 2013 season.
The biggest roadblock to dealing Foles is his contract. He signed a two-year, $24.54 million contract before the start of last season. He's set to make $8.75 million, which is a high price to pay for a backup QB. Foles might need to take a pay cut if a team is going to trade for him. With that in mind, here are the three teams interested in Nick Foles and what role he'd play for them.
Dallas Cowboys
The Cowboys have seen Foles play plenty when he was on the Eagles, so they should have a good idea of just how talented he is. The team has Tony Romo locked in as the starter, but he's battled injuries far too often in recent seasons and the team badly needs an upgrade at the backup QB spot. The team was a disaster when the Brandon Weeden/Matt Cassel/Kellen Moore trio was pressed into duty. Foles would be an upgrade, but the Cowboys don't have the salary cap space to afford Foles at his current price. He'd need to take a pay cut for Dallas to trade for him.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins have Ryan Tannehill as the starting QB, but don't plan on bringing back backup QB Matt Moore. While the team has Logan Thomas as well, he's unproven. Foles would likely serve as the team's backup and possibly push Tannehill. However, much like the Cowboys, the team is tight on cap space and would need to have Foles take a pay cut. Washington Redskins
Robert Griffin III for Nick Foles and both players restructure their contracts, who says no? I'm only half kidding with that fake trade because it actually makes some sense. RGIII is a goner in Washington and fellow backup Colt McCoy is also a free agent. The Redskins could in theory take on Foles' contract, but having him take a pay cut makes far more sense. Foles would once again be the backup, and he'd provide insurance in case the team can't agree to a long-term deal with Kirk Cousins or if Cousins regresses next season.
