The NFL offseason is in a lull until training camps start later in July, but there are still plenty of rumors and rumblings around the league. With few notable names left on the market, much of the buzz centers on players looking for contract extensions. Here are the latest NFL rumors and news from around the league.
Broncos increase offer to Miller
There has finally been some movement in the Von Miller saga. Weeks after telling Denver he would not play this season under the franchise tag, the Broncos have raised their offer to Miller, according to ProFootballTalk:
As the Broncos try to get a long-term deal done with linebacker Von Miller, they’ve increased the amount of the six-year, $114.5 million deal that will be guaranteed. Vic Lombardi of Altitude Sports recently suggested that the number has been bumped to $61 million.
That’s an increase of only $3 million from the team’s prior position that $58 million would be guaranteed. Presumably, the $61 million would be fully guaranteed by March 2017, based on reports that the Broncos separately accelerated the trigger from the start of year three to the start of year two.
Miller at one point was seeking more than $70 million in total guarantees, with most of it becoming fully guaranteed by March 2017. The Eagles gave defensive lineman Fletcher Cox $63 million in injury guarantees last month, and the Colts gave quarterback Andrew Luck $87 million in injury guarantees at signing.
The two sides have until July 15 to reach a long-term deal. Miller, the reigning Super Bowl MVP, recorded 35 tackles and 11 sacks last season.
Jets to make one last push to re-sign Wilkerson
Jets defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson is expected to hold out of training camp as he tries to get a long-term deal from New York, and NFL Network's Mike Garafolo reports that the Jets will make one last attempt to give him that before the July 15 deadline.
Via NFLTradeRumors:
Mike Garfolo of NFL Media spoke with a source close to Jets franchise DL Muhammad Wilkerson who mentioned that they expect the team to make one last effort to sign Wilkerson to a long-term contract.
However, Garafolo’s source admitted it’s unlikely that the Jets’ attempts will result in an agreement, especially when you consider that the two sides really have never been close on a new deal.
In regards to training camp, the source told Garafolo that Wilkerson has not committed to reporting in time for the start of workouts. Of course, the Jets can’t fine Wilkerson until he signs his franchise tag.
Wilkerson had 64 tackles with 12 sacks and two forced fumbles last season.
Patriots to add Andre Johnson or Roddy White?
New England hasn't been able to find a reliable outside receiver since Randy Moss left the team, and though Julian Edelman and Danny Amendola are proven slot guys, they aren't necessarily satisfied their their receiving core. According to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin, The Patriots could add a veteran receiver like Andre Johnson or Roddy White before the start of the season:
Veteran receivers Andre Johnson and Roddy White are reportedly staying in shape and hoping for another year in the NFL. The Patriots probably have enough receiver depth for now with Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan, Malcolm Mitchell, Keshawn Martin, Aaron Dobson, Nate Washington, and others. But if they suffer injuries in camp or Bill Belichick isn’t thrilled with the depth chart, don’t be surprised if the Patriots take a flyer on one of the veterans, like they did last year with Reggie Wayne (who decided after one week that he wasn’t a good fit with the Patriots).
Johnson caught 41 passes for 503 yards and four touchdowns with the Colts last season, while White had 43 catches for 506 yards and one touchdown with the Falcons.
