For the second time in the past week, there's a major trade near the top of the NFL Draft. The Philadelphia Eagles moved up to the No. 2 overall pick, with the Cleveland Browns trading down. Now that the details of the trade are known, it's time to grade the Browns-Eagles trade. The Eagles clearly want to draft either Jared Goff or Carson Wentz, while the Browns are moving down to acquire more picks and help their rebuild.
Eagles Get: No. 2 overall pick, 2017 4th round pick
Browns Get: No. 8 overall pick, 3rd round pick (No. 77 overall), 4th round pick (No. 100 overall), 2017 1st rounder, 2017 2nd round pick
Browns Grade: A+
I'm a big fan of moving down and getting more picks, and that's exactly what Cleveland did. The Browns got the better end of this deal, as they get more value according to the NFL Trade value chart, especially if the Eagles don't make the playoffs next season. The Titans now have an impressive six picks in the top 100 selections and could end up with six future starters early this year. That's exactly what the Browns needed, as they have needs everywhere and were not one player away. Now, the Browns can add cheap, talented players to continue their rebuild. The Browns still need a long-term QB, but could get one next year or take someone to groom later in this year's draft. Getting the first two Eagles' picks next year is huge. The Browns crushed this trade.
Eagles Grade: D-
I'm not going to flunk the Eagles, mostly because there's a chance they land a franchise QB. But the Eagles are taking a massive amount of risk here, and are definitely the losers in this deal. While they keep a Day 2 selection, the Eagles are now down their first two picks next year. The team had plenty of needs they needed to address, and will now use Wentz/Goff as their No. 3 QB for at least one season. The Eagles' depth will suffer as a result of this trade. And if the Eagles were going to move up to No. 2, it makes their offseason QB spending spree make even less sense that it did at the time. The Eagles gave Sam Bradford a two-year, $35 million deal this offseason, with $22 million of that guaranteed. They also handed Chase Daniel and his 50 career competitions a three-year, $21 million deal with $12 million guaranteed. The Eagles didn't really need a QB with $32 million guaranteed already tied up, and yet they bet their future on moving up for a QB the Browns didn't want. It doesn't make much sense.
