While NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has a Twitter account, he very rarely uses it.
So, when Goodell posted his first tweets since the first day of the 2013 regular season, you would have to think that he did it with a distinct purpose in mind.
Per Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, Goodell posted five tweets -- two of which centered on a fundraising event at Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School on Friday, one lauding a meeting with the Associated Press Sports Editors on the future of the game, and then these two cryptic statements on the future of the game itself:
We have a bright future due to strength & quality of the game, players, coaches & fan interest
— Roger Goodell (@nflcommish) April 25, 2014
We always have our challenges but we are excited to meet and exceed them
— Roger Goodell (@nflcommish) April 25, 2014
The NFL has been under fire from several angles ranging from player health to NFL Draft fatigue with the event being delayed two weeks into mid-May.
Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk also posits that the tweets could be in response to Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban's recent statements that the "fat hog will be slaughtered" in reference to NFL popularity.
Whatever the reason for the commissioner's tweets, it seems he is confident that the NFL will both meet its problems head on and grow stronger as a result.
