Sports minister Nigel Huddleston says the sanctions placed on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich should act as a ‘wake-up call’ and lead to ‘significant change’ over who can own football clubs.
He also warned that a ‘more robust’ Premier League owners’ and directors’ test is needed to stop such situations from happening in the future, backing one of the key recommendations to come out of MP Tracey Crouch’s fan-led review last year.
‘We are at a turning point in English football,’ said Huddleston at a Digital, Culture, Media and Sport committee hearing.
