Steve Bruce’s joy at Newcastle’s first win in 12 games was dampened by captain Jamaal Lascelles limping off against Everton and facing several weeks on the sidelines.
Lascelles, who has only recently returned after struggling with the after-effects of Coronavirus, suffered a hamstring injury at Goodison and had to be replaced after 54 minutes of the 2-0 victory.
‘What we have found is the lads who struggled with Covid, it has left them fatigued and causes muscular problems,’ said Bruce.
‘It looks as though Jamal will miss a few weeks so we are threadbare in that position (centre-half).
