Newcastle United have asked about taking Manchester City defender Eliaquim Mangala on loan following the arrival of Aymeric Laporte from Athletic Bilbao.
Mangala, 26, has been a target for Rafa Benitez since the summer and will be surplus to requirements after Laporte moves to the Etihad Stadium.
City would want Newcastle to pay the majority of his £80,000-a-week wage.
Newcastle have Kenedy on loan from Chelsea but their failure to secure Daniel Sturridge on another proposed loan deal means they still have room for another under Premier League regulations.
