Newcastle have firmed up their interest in Sandro Tonali after opening discussions with AC Milan over the Italy international midfielder.
The Magpies are determined to add a midfielder with Inter Milan wanting £70m for Nicolo Barella and Leicester City wanting £60m for James Maddison who has been leaning towards a move to Tottenham.
Newcastle have made a bid of around £42million (€50million) for Tonali.
Eddie Howe is open to moving Bruno Guimaraes further up the pitch if Tonali, 23, arrives.
Tonali, who has 14 senior caps for Italy, is set to feature for his country at the Under-21 European Championship.
