Newcastle midfielder Jonjo Shelvey is nursing a fractured hand after stepping in to disrupt a training-ground fight between captain Jamaal Lascelles and Mo Diame.
The Magpies skipper had labelled former West Ham and Hull City midfielder Diame ‘lazy’ in training and punches were soon thrown in response.
Shelvey acted as the peacemaker in the scuffle but came off worse as he was caught in the crossfire.
The 25-year-old is now wearing a cast but the injury shouldn’t affect his availability for Newcastle in their upcoming match against Southampton.
The confrontation occurred on Thursday, just 24 hours before the club announced a new six-year contract for Lascelles who has impressed since taking on the captaincy.
