Jason Tindall said Eddie Howe was able to watch Newcastle's 4-1 win over Manchester United from hospital and sent him a congratulatory message on full-time.
However, there was no update on the health of the head coach, who was admitted on Friday night after feeling unwell during the week and has been undergoing tests over the weekend.
Tindall confirmed that Howe played no part in preparations, and it appears likely he will still be in charge for Wednesday's visit of Crystal Palace.
The assistant boss said: 'I've just seen a message from him congratulating the performance.
