Atletico look destined to miss out on Champions League glory again, exiting at the hands of rivals Real Madrid for the fourth season in a row, following final defeats in 2014 and 2016. Atleti have lost all three of the European Cup finals they have so far contested, all in agonising fashion. They lost to Bayern Munich in a 1974 European Cup final replay (in the days before penalty shootouts), having been seconds away from winning the first meeting. Then, 40 years later they were moments away from winning the final against Real, only to be taken to extra-time where they defeated once more.
