Newcastle United have had a £16million offer for Everton's James McCarthy rejected.
The Championship high fliers are keen to build a squad fit for the Premier League and had identified McCarthy as a quality signing who could lift them to promotion.
However, Everton chairman Bill Kenwright has told them the Republic of Ireland international is not for sale.
McCarthy joined Everton for £13m from Wigan in 2013 but has grown unsettled this season and faces a battle to start regularly following the arrival of Morgan Schneiderlin and pending return to fitness of Muhamed Besic.
