The MLB trade deadline on July 31st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the New York Yankees are starting to heat up. The Yankees are 43-44, but only a few games back of a Wild Card berth - meaning the Yankees could decide to be either sellers or buyers as the deadline gets closer. With that in mind, here all the latest Yankees trade rumors:
Yankees trading Beltran?
If New York decides to sell at the trade deadline, the most likely candidate to be dealt is Carlos Beltran, according to Ken Davidoff of the New York Post:
And now the Yankees, by virtue of their disappointing results so far this season, have to consider trading him by Aug. 1, this year’s deadline, in the final season of his three-year contract.
The 39-year-old Beltran knows something might happen, so he is prepared to deal with that. He spoke of “the protocol” that occurs when a player with a say in the matter — as Beltran has, thanks to his limited no-trade clause — gets shopped; he huddles with his agent, Dan Lozano, and team officials. The Yankees already have Beltran’s list of 15 teams to which he must approve a trade. Though Beltran wouldn’t divulge his list, he said it features “a little bit of both” leagues, and he said he would be amenable to going to a National League team even though his best role at this juncture is designated hitter.
Beltran is batting .300 with 19 home runs and 56 RBIs so far this season.
New York sets asking price for Chapman
Aroldis Chapman is the other player the Yankees are most likely to part ways with at the deadline, and they have reportedly set the asking price in what they would like in return for him.
Via MLB Trade Rumors:
The water-treading Yankees would want a far better return for dominant lefty closer Aroldis Chapman than the one they gave up for him during the winter. The Bombers sent prospects Eric Jagielo, Tony Renda, Rookie Davis and Caleb Cotham to Cincinnati for Chapman amid his domestic violence allegations last December. Chapman ended up sitting out the first month-plus of the season because of a suspension related to that incident, but the soon-to-be free agent has continued his reign as one of baseball’s premier relievers since.
New York is expected to trade either Chapman or Andrew Miller before the deadline, though they'd prefer to keep Miller. Chapman has a 2.49 ERA with 17 saves in 26 appearances this season.
