The New York Yankees are in the market for starting pitching help prior to the 2015 MLB trade deadline on July 31st, with Cincinnati Reds righty Johnny Cueto and Philadelphia Phillies lefty Cole Hamels standing as two of the biggest names connected to the club at this juncture.
However, ESPN's Andrew Marchand doesn't see a trade for Cueto or Hamels happening in the Bronx.
"The Yankees are not set up to make a big deal anyway because they want to preserve their top youth and do not want future salary issues to weigh down their long-term planning," Marchand said. "Unless prices drop significantly, an ace like Cole Hamels or Johnny Cueto is probably too expensive."
New York has embarked on a very un-Yankees like youth movement, looking to reinforce their currently veteran-laden roster with homegrown talent from within the organization.
A trade for Cueto or especially Hamels could end up stripping the team's farm system, leaving them with less cheap, young talent under multiple years of control to utilize both on the roster and has future trade chips in later years.
