The New York Yankees have already acquired a quality starting pitcher in Jaime Garcia in a deal with the Minnesota Twins, but that doesn't mean they've dropped their pursuit of Sonny Gray.
According to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports, the Yankees remain "optimistic" that they will be able to land Gray before Monday's deadline.
The New York Yankees and Oakland A’s remain heavily engaged in trade talks for Sonny Gray, and the sides are optimistic something can get done.
Even after landing Jaime Garcia from the Minnesota Twins, the Yankees have kept their focus on Gray as their top rotation target, and both sides have compromised over the past several days to a point where a trade looks probable. The A’s dropped their request for either Gleyber Torres or Clint Frazier, but the Yankees have a deep prospect stash, including Estevan Florial, James Kaprielian, Justus Sheffield, Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo and many others.
The Yankees are in contact with Yu Darvish, as well, but prefer the idea of adding a 20-something pitcher such as Gray, with two more years of control.
If the Yankees do land Gray, Garcia would become a long man.
Talks between the two sides had stalled late in the week due to New York's unwillingness to part with either Torres or Frazier, though Oakland is now willing to look at other prospects.
New York has also expressed interest in acquiring Yu Darvish and Justin Verlander, but Gray is their top target due to his contract. He can't become a free agent until after the 2019 season.
Gray is 6-5 with a 3.43 ERA and 94 strikeouts in 16 starts this season.
