The New York Yankees remain active in talks before the trade deadline and they continue to work towards a blockbuster deal with the Oakland Athletics. New York is attempting to land starting pitcher Sonny Gray and potentially first baseman Yonder Alonso.
"Multiple sources indicated Tuesday that the Yankees were making progress toward a deal with Oakland, which could send not only Gray -- who was slated to start for the A's on Tuesday in Toronto -- but also first baseman Yonder Alonso to New York," reports MLB.com's Mark Feinsand. "MLB.com's Jon Paul Morosi reported Tuesday that the A's are focused on adding a young center fielder, with Yankees No. 5 prospect and Futures Game participant Estevan Florial ranking high on their list."
The Yankees were one of seven teams to scout Gray in his start Wednesday night. Gray took the loss against the Blue Jays, going six innings and allowing four unearned runs (although the error was his fault). Gray has a 6-4 record with a 3.43 ERA and a 1.175 WHIP. Pair that with a lackluster starting pitching market and Gray being under team control for two years after this one, it's easy to see why the demand and asking price is so high for Gray.
In addition to potential interest in Florial, Joel Sherman of the New York Post suggests some combination of Yankees prospects like Jorge Mateo (No. 8 on MLB.com), Domingo Acevedo (No. 10), Freicer Perez (No. 15) and Albert Abreu (No. 11) could be included.

The Yankees are in need of pitching help, with Michael Pineda done for the year and then some. Plus, Jordan Montgomery has hit a rough patch and Masahiro Tanaka is having a down year. The addition of Gray (or another top-tier starter), would help the Yankees in their effort to close the one-game gap between them and the Red Sox or maintain their lead in the AL Wild Card.
As for the interest in first baseman Yonder Alonso, the Yankees are in the market for a rental. Youngster Greg Bird is battling injuries, while a platoon of Chase Headley and Garrett Cooper isn't an ideal option. Alonso, who made the All-Star game this year, is hitting .262 with 21 homers and 45 RBIs. It's a breakout year for Alonso, who has never hit more than nine homers in a single season.
