The New York Yankees already made one blockbuster trade before the MLB Trade Deadline and they might just make another.
In their quest to upgrade their starting pitching rotation, New York has their sights set on Yu Darvish, Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia, according to Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports.
The New York Yankees, in search of a starter to bolster their inconsistent rotation, have been in contact on Yu Darvish, Sonny Gray and Jaime Garcia, among other pitchers.
The Yankees would like either Darvish or Gray, but sources suggest they are intent on keeping their very top prospects – starting with Clint Frazier, Gleyber Torres and Justus Sheffield – which could inhibit their chances at either (though they have a deep system so it can’t be ruled out). Garcia, whose deal to the Twins blew up after seeming to be just about done, is seen as a decent fallback candidate in case the big deals don’t work out, and he wouldn’t take one of the very top prospects to acquire.
The Cubs and Dodgers are also interested in Darvish, while talks between the Astros and A's about Sonny Gray are "heating up." Justin Verlander is also rumored to be available.
Darvish, who is in the final year of his contract, is 6-8 with a 3.44 ERA with 143 strikeouts in 21 starts this season. Gray is 6-4 with a 3.66 ERA with 85 strikeouts in 15 starts and under club control for two more years.
The Yankees are in need of pitching help, with Michael Pineda done for the year and then some. Jordan Montgomery has hit a rough pitch and Masahiro Tanaka is having a down year. They're hoping the addition of a top-tier starter will help their effort to close their 3.5 game gap behind the Red Sox and/or maintain their lead in the AL Wild Card.
