The New York Yankees pre-deadline focus appears to be on starting pitching help and a first baseman, but the Yankees are at least open to looking elsewhere. In particular, they called the Miami Marlins about landing OF Giancarlo Stanton.
Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports the Yankees called the Marlins to check on the trade status of Stanon.
"Sources with ties to the Miami Marlins say the Yankees were one of the teams to check in regarding the status of Stanton, the great slugger whose mega contract is quite likely too big for the Miami franchise," Heyman writes. "It isn’t known exactly how serious the Yankees were about adding baseball’s other superb bigger-than-life star, and they obviously have much more pressing needs than another superstar power-hitting outfielder ... It isn’t believed the Yankees’ talk with the Marlins went far beyond an initial phone call, and that apparently came weeks ago, and there’s no evidence any Stanton talks are ongoing with the Yankees at this time."
The inference Heyman makes is that this was more due diligence than trying to swing a trade for the power hitter. And with Clint Frazier playing well since his call-up (plus Aaron Judge), the Yankees might be better off devoting their resources elsewhere. Stanton is great, but a top starting pitcher would help the team more than another corner outfielder.

Stanton, who has $295 million left on the 13-year, $325 million he signed in 2014, is hitting .271 with 30 home runs and 65 RBIs this year. If the Marlins do elect to move him to cut down on their payroll, plenty of teams will have interest.
