The MLB trade deadline on August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the New York Yankees are starting to heat up. The Yankees are 44-45, but are just a few games back of a Wild Card berth. The Yankees could be buyers or sellers at the deadline, although the front office hasn't made that decision yet. With that in mind, here all the latest Yankees trade rumors you need to know.
Yankees looking to trade Eovaldi?
Nathan Eovaldi emerged as a great young pitcher for the Yankees last season, posting a 14-3 record in his first season with the team. However, his struggles this season has put him on the trade block, according to Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review:
As they look to recast their starting rotation, the Pirates have talked with the New York Yankees about a possible trade for right-hander Nathan Eovaldi, a source told the Tribune-Review.
After allowing six runs in 4 1⁄3 innings on July 1 against the San Diego Padres, Eovaldi was moved into the bullpen.
On Friday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Eovaldi will go back into the rotation on Tuesday. Last season, Eovaldi put together a string of solid outings in the second half, posting a 3.67 ERA in nine starts.
The Texas Rangers reportedly also are interested in Eovaldi.
The 26-year-old Eovaldi is 7-6 with a 5.11 ERA in 19 appearances this season, including 16 starts.
New York to extend Chapman?
The Yankees have been shopping closer Aroldis Chapman over the past month, but now, they appear to have changed course. According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, New York is considering offering Chapman an extension:
One possibility that the Yankees are considering if they stay competitive, according to major-league sources: Signing potential free-agent closer Aroldis Chapman to an extension.
The team has yet to initiate any such discussions, sources say, and retains the option of trading Chapman and then re-signing him in the offseason without losing a draft pick.
Chapman has a 2.39 ERA and 17 saves in 27 appearances this season.
Yankees undecided on deadline strategy
Even though there are just two weeks until the deadline, the Yankees are torn on if they want to be buyers or sellers, according to ESPN's Wallace Matthews:
New York Yankees brass is divided on whether to buy or sell as the Aug. 1 non-waiver trade deadline approaches, a source informed ESPN's Wallace Matthews on Friday.
On one side, the Yankees' baseball operations people, led by GM Brian Cashman, "believe the team should sell off its assets and plan for the future," while the business folk, led by owner Hal Steinbrenner and team president Randy Levine, believe the Yankees are still in contention, per Matthews' source. New York enters Friday with a 44-44 record, 7 1/2 games behind the AL East-leading Baltimore Orioles and six games out of a wild-card spot.
Because of that, New York is expected to see how the teams plays during the next week and a half and won't make any moves until the days right before the deadline.
