Coveted free agent outfielder Yoenis Cespedes said recently that he'd love to stay in New York City, prompting some to believe that he'll leave a five-year, $100 million offer from the Washington Nationals on the table to come back to NYC.
However, it may not be the New York Mets who Cespedes is suiting up for -- it could very well be the New York Yankees.
Per a source cited by John Harper of the New York Daily News, Cespedes' agents over at Roc Nation contacted the Yankees on Thursday night to suggest that the star outfielder would consider coming to the Bronx on a three-year deal. More on this story in the Chat Sports iPhone and Android apps.
Several MLB experts have cited the team's bloated payroll and cache of high-priced veterans as reason enough for them to stay away from a free agent with an exorbitant price tag like Cespedes. However, owner Hal Steinbrenner isn't ruling out a deal.
“I’m comfortable where payroll is right now, but we’re always looking to improve the club," Steinbrenner told reporters. "You never know with us. We’ve surprised people in the past.”
Cespedes is said to be seeking an ideal contract of six years, $120 million. He hit .291 with 35 home runs between the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets in 2015.
