The MLB trade deadline on August 1st is rapidly approaching, and the trade rumors around the New York Yankees are starting to heat up. The Yankees are 44-44 at the All-Star break, but a few games back of a Wild Card berth. The Yankees could be sellers at the deadline, although the front office hasn't made that decision yet. With that in mind, here all the latest Yankees trade rumors you need to know.
Yankees Torn On Trading Key Players?
The Yankees seem like potential sellers at the trade deadline, but ESPN reports the front office is torn on whether to trade away players. General manager Brian Cashman wants to sell, but owner Hal Steinbrenner and president Randy Levine think the team can still make the postseason.
According to the source, the baseball people would be willing to trade the core of the team, players such as closer Aroldis Chapman, first baseman Mark Teixeira, starting pitchers Nathan Eovaldi and Ivan Nova, and right fielder Carlos Beltran, who has been the team's best hitter all season and its only position player to make the All-Star team.
In addition, the Yankees would like to deal Jacoby Ellsbury and Brian McCann, but their contracts make that unlikely. New York would also listen to teams asking about reliever Andrew Miller, and have told Miller he'll be dealt if a team meets their asking high price. The Yankees should delay a final decision on whether to sell until the deadline is closer.
Pineda On The Block?
Another player the Yankees could move is starting pitcher Michael Pineda. He hasn't been mentioned in many trade talks, but Ken Rosenthal reports he could be a surprise trade chip. Pineda has pitched well this season, although the Yankees might be hesitant to deal to the 27-year-old starter. However, Pineda is set to be a free agent after the 2017 season and Rosenthal says he might get a bigger return than he's actually worth.
Indians "Sleepers" For Yankees' Players?
If the Yankees do decide to be sellers, the Indians could be an under-the-radar trade partner.
If the Yankees move either Andrew Miller or Aroldis Chapman, Indians are sleepers: Cleveland has motive, need, and prospects to make a deal.
— Buster Olney (@Buster_ESPN) July 13, 2016
The Yankees have said they won't deal Miller unless they get an impressive offer. With Chapman's contract set to expire, he could be the more likely of the two to be dealt. The Indians, like Olney mentioned, have a strong farm system and could afford to land Chapman (or even Miller). Of course, it's unclear if the Indians would be willing to give up the prospects needed.
