Landing Gerrit Cole Isn't A Guarantee
Over the past few weeks, a trade between the Yankees and Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole seemed to be a matter of when, not if. However, according to ESPN’s Jerry Crasnick, the Yankees aren't the only team in the Cole sweepstakes.
The #Pirates have been engaged in talks with multiple clubs on Gerrit Cole since the winter meetings. This isn't a case of the #Yankees or bust. A trade doesn't appear imminent at this point. But things could pick up again between Christmas and New Years.

The Yankees are still believed to be the most likely destination for Cole, but that isn't set in stone. Cole is coming off a season where he had a 12-12 record with a 4.26 ERA in 203 innings pitched.
International Signings Improve Farm System
New York's offseason moves have shown that the Yankees are in win now mode, that doesn't mean they have forgotten about their farm systems.
On Friday, the Yankees signed two promising prospects, Venezuelan outfielder Raimfer Salinas and catcher Antonio Cabello. Salinas is smaller in stature player with great speed, covering a ton of ground in the outfield. Cabello is only 17 years old with great patience at the plate and an above average arm behind the dish.
With the signings of both Salinas and Cabello, the Yankees now have six of Baseball America’s top-30 international prospects from this year’s class.
Yankees Prospect To Keep An Eye On
When discussing Yankee's prospects, the name that comes up most frequently is shortstop Gleyber Torres. The 21-year-old is a consensus top-three prospect in the MLB. With that being said, there may be a Yankees prospect with more upside than Torres in Estevan Florial, who is coming off a great 2017 where he posted a .855 OPS for the Yankees A-Level affiliate the Charleston Riverdogs.
For comparison, Torres two years ago posted a .700 OPS with the Riverdogs.
The Yankees have a stacked outfield currently with Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton, Brett Gardner, Clint Frazier, and Jacoby Ellsbury. With outfielders like this, there is no rush to get Florial into the majors but is definitely someone to keep an eye on entering the season and going forward.
