The New York Yankees, at 67-62, aren't out of the AL Wild Card race yet, but they are 3.5 games back and stuck behind four other teams. With the waiver trade deadline of August 31st nearly here, the Yankees are looking a variety of potential moves. While the Hot Stove has cooled off substantially compared to the non-waiver trade deadline, there still rumors floating around. Check out all the latest Yankees rumors and news below.
Yankees Making Numerous Waiver Claims?
The Yankees, perhaps in an attempt to keep the Baltimore Orioles from making moves, have been aggressive on the wavier claim market. Here's what ESPN's Buster Olney reports.
The Orioles are monitoring the trade market, with three days left to add players who would be postseason-eligible. A big problem for the O's is that the Yankees are ahead of them in the waiver process, and according to execs with other teams, New York has again been aggressive in making claims.
That type of action could upset teams, especially if the Yankees are only making claims to block other moves. Of course, the Yankees are still trying to make a push for the postseason.
Will Yankees Deal Brian McCann?
The veteran catcher was the subject of trade rumors during the non-waiver deadline and again during the current waiver period. He cleared waivers two weeks ago, allowing him to be dealt anywhere. Although the Atlanta Braves have been heavily linked to the hometown player, McCann has yet to be moved. In fact, NJ.com hints a deal might not happen until the offseason.
The countdown to the waiver trade deadline is approaching, but that doesn't mean rumors connecting Yankees catcher Brian McCann to his former team — the Atlanta Braves — will die anytime soon. A deal between now and Aug. 31 certainly could happen, although a deal in the offseason is much more likely.
The Braves are moving into a new, expensive stadium in 2017 and they'll need to sell tickets. McCann also adds a veteran presence and fills a need at catcher. While McCann has been moved to DH, he can still serve as the veteran backstop the Braves covet.
Gary Sanchez On Fire
Gary Sanchez, the new Yankees' catcher, has been nothing short of spectacular. He's at 11 homers in just 23 career games, making him the fastest player to ever reach that mark. Even Sanchez is a bit surprised.
"I don't have an explanation for it," Sanchez said, through an interpreter. "I'm doing the same routine that I was doing in the Minor Leagues, I'm doing it here. I'm getting really good results right now. That's it."
While Sanchez has to cool off at some point (right?), he's established himself as the catcher of the present and future of the Yankees. His play behind the plate has also been solid.
