The New York Yankees, at 57-56, aren't out of the AL Wild Card race, but they are 4.5 games back. With the trade deadline over, the Yankees are focused on the rest of the season and it's likely only a matter of time before the youth movement in New York gets started. While the Hot Stove has cooled off substantially, there are still moves being made. Check out all the latest Yankees rumors and news below.
A-Rod Not Done Yet, Heading To Marlins?
Alex Rodriguez's career is supposed to end after his final game with the New York Yankees. However, other executives around the MLB aren't so sure. ESPN's survey of 24 MLB executives show that nine believe A-Rod will play again next year. One is convinced he'll be with the Miami Marlins.
"The Miami Marlins will take him," one exec said. "One hundred percent chance."
Rodriguez and the Marlins make sense on the surface, especially since Rodriguez lives in Miami. He's just a few home runs shy of reaching 700 and the Marlins could use the revenue that would come with adding him. Jon Heyman reports the Marlins have had internal talks about adding Rodriguez, although it's a still a long shot.
Rodriguez has struggled this year and there's a reason he's been on the bench a lot this year. It might be a bit unlikely, but don't expect the Rodriguez returning rumors to die down for a bit.
Nathan Eovaldi Injury
In some bad news for the Yankees, starting pitcher Nathan Eovaldi left last night's game with right elbow pain. Eovaldi threw only 12 pitches and his velocity was down before leaving. Eovaldi has battled elbow injuries in the past and there's reason for concern. He underwent Tommy John surgery as a high schooler and missed the last month of last year with elbow inflammation. He's back in New York for tests, which will hopefully come up clean.
Yankees Send Down Luis Severino
Severino struggled Tuesday in a start against the Red Sox, when he allowed five runs on seven hits in 5.1 innings. The Yankees have now sent him down, with the goal of getting Severino's changeup working again.
"When we watched last night's start, his fastball command was not great, his slider was somewhat inconsistent - and granted, he's facing a really difficult lineup - and he didn't throw many changeups," manager Joe Girardi said. "We really want to finish him off. I think to get through lineups a third time, which you want all your pitchers to be able to do, a kid with stuff like that, you need to have a third pitch."
Severino also said the confidence in his changeup was lacking. However, there's another potential reason for sending Severino down. If he's in the minors for another 15 days, the Yankees get another year of team control.
