Thanks to an unexpectedly strong start, the New York Yankees are in position to be buyers at the MLB Trade Deadline. Starting pitching is the top need, with the Yankees linked to various pitchers. The latest is Chris Archer of the Tampa Bay Rays, who is reportedly their top target according to MLB.com.
Archer is 3-3 with a 3.76 ERA this season, but he is pitching better than that, as his 3.07 FIP and 10.7 K/9 rate show. Toss in a contract that gives his team control through 2021 (with a salary of $11 million that year), and there would be a feeding frenzy if the Rays were to put him on the trade market this summer.
So Archer is the Holy Grail for contenders with a deep inventory of prospects to offer -- the Dodgers, Yankees, Astros and Cubs, to name four.
The 28-year-old has been connected to the Yankees in the past, along with numerous teams. However, the asking price for Archer surely remains high.
During his six-year MLB career, Archer has posted a 44-54 record with a 3.53 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP. His win-loss record is brought down by the Rays' poor team performance.
