The New York Yankees are continuing to look to upgrade their roster this offseason in order to get back on top of the baseball world. Two players New York has been heavily linked to are pitchers Yu Darvish and Gerrit Cole, and today's Yankees rumors roundup involves both of these players, and one of them identifies the Yankees as a favorite for his services. Here are all the latest Yankees news and rumors you need to know.
Yu Darvish's Six Possible Teams
Free agent pitcher Yu Darvish announced on his Twitter late Wednesday night that he is deciding between six teams.
Darvish was responding to a report from Max Wildstein of Sporting News, which stated that the free agent starter has received ongoing interest from the Rangers, Yankees, Cubs, Astros, and Twins.
"I know one more team is in," Darvish responded. Right now, it's unclear who that "mystery team" is.
Darvish went 10-12 with a 3.86 ERA in 31 starts with the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers last season.
Gerrit Cole Still A Possibility
Wednesday was a strange day for Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Gerrit Cole, as the Houston Astros appeared to land the starting pitcher in a trade. Shortly after, however, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reported there is "no deal" and that the trade is a "false rumor."
This means the Yankees still have a chance, if they want, to land Cole. According to the New York Post, the Yankees shut down trade talks for Cole, but there are conflicting reports as Mark Feinsand of MLB.com said "don't count the Yankees out yet" on MLB Network on Thursday morning.
Cole is coming off the worst season of his career - 12-12 with a 4.26 ERA in 33 starts - but has the upside to be a reliable front-end starting pitcher.
Trade Requests For Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar
New York general manager Brian Cashman appeared on SiriusXM Fantasy Radio earlier this week and said he has received a ton of trade requests for outfielder Clint Frazier and third baseman Miguel Andujar.
"There's a recognition of Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar as the next level of guys right below Gleyber Torres and it's understandable why, with what these guys have done coming through our system," said Cashman.
Frazier is 23 years old and batted .231/.268/.448 with four homers and 17 RBIs in 39 games last season. Andujar is 22 years old and rated as the Yankees fifth-best prospect according to MLB Pipeline, Between Double-A Trenton and Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Andujar had a .315/.352/.498 batting line in 125 games.
