The New York Yankees are expected to be active ahead of the trade deadline are known to be targeting pitching after losing Jordan Montgomery for the season.
They have already been linked to four pitchers - Cole Hamels, Michael Fulmer, Brad Hand, and Chris Archer - but they appear to be targeting two stars from the crosstown New York Mets, according to ESPN's Coley Harvey.
At present, there's very little reason to believe deGrom or his Mets teammate Noah Syndergaard will end up switching Big Apple allegiances this summer. It seems more likely the Yankees will make a trade with a team not located in the Northeast, or in Flushing. And Mets GM Sandy Alderson contends his reeling team -- losers of six straight entering Friday and tumbling down the NL East standings -- will rebound and won't be in seller's mode at the deadline. But of course, ahead of this weekend's Subway Series between the inter-borough foes, a possible Yankees/Mets trade has been a topic of discussion on sports talk radio and in the tabloids.
The Yankees were looking to upgrade their rotation this offseason and were in the race to sign Yu Darvish, but after trading for Giancarlo Stanton, they didn't have enough space under the luxury tax threshold to sign him.
Now, however, the need for another top-end starting pitcher has been made more glaring in the wake of Montgomery's injury.
It remains to be seen if the Mets are willing to part with any of their starts or if they'll start a rebuild ahead of the trade deadline on July 31. After getting off to a record start to the season, the Mets are only 27-33 and are in fourth place in the NL East.
deGrom is 4-1 with a 1.57 ERA and 106 strikeouts in 13 starts this season while Syndergaard is also 4-1 with a 3.06 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 11 starts.
