With spring training upon us, the New York Yankees appear to be happy with their current roster going into the start of the 2018 season.
As such, New York likely won't make any additions until the trade deadline - and Texas Rangers pitcher Cole Hamels figures to be their top target at that time, according to Joe Giglio of NJ.com.
Texas looks poised to have another losing season. When July rolls around, that could mean veterans like Hamels and Adrian Beltre are the subject of trade rumors. Hamels, 34, needs to bounce back after an uncharacteristic 4.20 ERA in 2017. Unlikely to hit the innings needed for a 2019 vesting option, making this a rental with big-time playoff experience.
The Yankees were looking to upgrade their rotation this offseason and were in the race to sign Yu Darvish, but after trading for Giancarlo Stanton, they didn't have enough space under the luxury tax threshold to sign him.
New York is hoping to stay below that threshold ($197 million) in anticipation of spending big on a loaded free agency class next offseason, and they have roughly $24 million still available under that threshold.

Hamels went 11-6 with a 4.20 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in 26 starts last season.
