The New York Yankees are expected to be active ahead of the trade deadline as they look to strengthen their roster before the postseason, and with the news that Jordan Montgomery needs Tommy John surgery, they're expected to add a pitcher.
While there isn't an overly extensive pitching market at the deadline, the Yankees have their eye on four players, according to Jim Bowden of The Athletic.
The Yankees have the most power of any team in baseball, with arguably the best and deepest bullpen in the game. However, their one glaring need is in their starting rotation where they could use a No. 2-type starter after ace Luis Severino at the top of their rotation. Cole Hamels, Michael Fulmer, Brad Hand and Chris Archer are already names being bandied in the industry as possible targets.
The Yankees were looking to upgrade their rotation this offseason and were in the race to sign Yu Darvish, but after trading for Giancarlo Stanton, they didn't have enough space under the luxury tax threshold to sign him.
Archer was one of their top targets at that time but did not want to meet Tampa Bay's high asking price. They also inquired about Fulmer during the winter before passing.
Hamels is expected to be pursued by a number of contenders of the next month and a half, and because of that, the Yankees don't appear to be the favorite to land him.
New York is also known to be pursuing Baltimore Orioles star Manny Machado, but the injury to Montgomery creates a more dire need for pitching, meaning the Yankees may have to wait to go after Machado until the offseason.
