The New York Yankees plan to be buyers as they try to strengthen their lineup before the playoffs, and they want to upgrade their starting pitching.
They had been targeting Jose Quintana before the Chicago Cubs traded for him, but with him now off the market, New York is looking at other options. According to Thomas Lott of the Sporting News, Justin Verlander could be someone who fits the bill:
The Rockies, Diamondbacks and Nationals are probably out of the discussion just based on the fact they can't give a ton back for Verlander. But the Astros, Yankees and Dodgers all have five or more Top 100 prospects according to MLB.com as well as great organizational depth.
They can make a trade and not hamstring themselves for years to come. Maybe they can make a deal happen for Verlander, maybe not. But a pitcher will be traded at this deadline and probably for too much. Verlander may be just that guy.
With an aging team that is out of the playoff race at 39-48, the Detroit Tigers are expected to be sellers at the deadline, and have been listening to offers for Verlander.
Verlander is 5-6 with a 4.73 ERA and 98 strikeouts in 18 starts so far this season.
