Both manager Joe Girardi and GM Brian Cashman had their contracts expire at the end of the season, and the New York Yankees are hoping to bring both of them back, according to NY Sports Day's Joe McDonald.
Industry sources confirmed to NY Sports Day, the Yankees are planning on re-upping both Girardi and general manager Brian Cashman with new contracts. The only question is if Girardi accepts.
Cashman and the Yankees are expected to reach a new deal fairly quickly, but things won't be so easy with Girardi.
After the Yankees were eliminated in Game 7 of the ALCS by the Houston Astros, Girardi stopped short of saying he absolutely wanted to return.
“I love what I do. I’ve always said, the first thing that I do is I always talk to my family first,” Girardi said. “They come first. Because I think when you have a job, I mean, your family has to buy in, too. It’s not just what you want out of life. It’s everyone buying in. So I’ll sit down, talk to my wife and my kids and see where they’re at and what they’re thinking. And then we’ll see what the Yankees are thinking.
“That’s not my concern right now. I’ve had ten great years here. I feel extremely blessed. God has been good to me. And we’ll see what the future holds.”
Girardi, who made $4 million a year during his last contract, is reportedly seeking a pay raise, which New York may not give him. He was the fourth-highest paid manager in the MLB this season behind the Chicago Cubs' Joe Maddon, Los Angeles Angels' Mike Scioscia, and San Francisco Giants' Bruce Bochy.
