The New York Yankees have a big decision upcoming regarding struggling starter CC Sabathia, whether it is keeping in the rotation and riding it out or moving him to the bullpen and finding a replacement via the trade market.
New York Post writer Joel Sherman appears to be an advocate of the latter, offering Chicago White Sox starter Jeff Samardzija as a potential target.
"Is the White Sox’s Jeff Samdardzija this year’s (Brandon) McCarthy – a guy with bad surface numbers and underlying stats that suggest he would be far better in a new locale? If Sabathia did not have a big contract, he would be out of the rotation," Sherman posits. "Do the Yankees use that as a reason to stick with him all year?"
Sabathia has been the subject of at-the-plate target practice all season long, giving up 115 hits in 95 innings while posting a robust 5.59 ERA and 1.40 WHIP.
Samardzija has struggled to a similar extent in his first year with the White Sox, allowing 123 hits in 108.2 inning with a 4.56 ERA and 1.32 WHIP. However, he's younger (30 years old) than Sabathia, less injury prone than CC, and comes at a fraction of his one-year, $9.8 million rental price.
