The New York Yankees, at 56-55, aren't out of the AL Wild Card race, but they are 4.5 games back. With the trade deadline over, the Yankees are focused on the rest of the season and it's likely only a matter of time before the youth movement in New York gets started. While the Hot Stove has cooled off substantially, there are still moves being made. Check out all the latest Yankees rumors and news below.
Yankees Add Tommy Layne
The Yankees announced Tuesday they signed former Red Sox reliever Tommy Layne to a major league deal. Layne had posted a 3.77 ERA in just over 28 innings this year for Boston. His addition gives the Yankees a proven lefty out of the bullpen, something they lost when they traded away Andrew Miller and Aroldis Chapman. The addition of Layne will require the Yankees to make a corresponding move on the 25-man roster. That move has not yet been announced, although sending down lefty Chasen Shreve is one option.
Tyler Austin The Next Call-Up?
The Yankees' youth movement is slowly starting, and more young prospects will be getting the call to the majors shortly. According to FanSided, Tyler Austin might be next to get called up (and the New York Post reports it's a possibility as well). A top 100 prospect back in 2013, Austin battled a wrist injury and struggled in the following years. But he's rebounded this year and is hitting an impressive .321 in Triple-A this year with 13 homers and a 1.054 OPS. Austin is listed as an outfielder, but could also slot in at DH or first base.
A-Rod In Monument Park?
The career of Alex Rodriguez will come to an end Friday, when he plays his last game with the Yankees. However, he'll remain an advisor to the team and owner Hal Steinbrenner will at least consider placing A-Rod in Monument Park.
"That is a bridge to cross when I come to it," Steinbrenner said on "The Michael Kay Show" on New York’s 98.7 FM ESPN. “But he has done a lot for this organization and it hasn’t just been on the field. I’m talking about players way back, like [Robinson] Cano. He was a mentor, too. He has done a lot for this organization on the field, but also off the field that a lot of people don’t know about. He has been a great leader and he’s been a great mentor."
Monument Park is considered sacred by the Yankees Fans and the inclusion of Rodriguez would be a controversial one. While Rodriguez is one of the best players of his generation, his play has been tainted by his steroid use.
