The New York Yankees are looking to improve on a successful 2017 campaign by adding a few key players and a new manager. Brian Cashman has already identified a number of free agent targets that the Bombers are interested in. But one that's not a free agent is Miami Marlins slugger Giancarlo Stanton. Since the sale of the team, the Marlins have been looking at off-loading some salary, and trading away Stanton and his remaining 10 years and $295 million contract would do exactly just that.

According to Jon Heyman (WFAN baseball insider), the Yankees and Marlins had a brief discussion about Stanton during the General Manager Meetings in Orlando, Florida. The question is how realistic is Stanton going to the Yankees? The Yankees have made it clear this offseason they want to get under the $197 million luxury tax threshold for 2018. Signing Stanton would make getting under that threshold next to impossible.
Does Stanton fit into the Yankees lineup? Sure, he is an asset to any team but the Yankees don't need a power hitting outfielder considering last season the Yankees led the majors with 241 home runs. Bottom line, there are many obstacles in landing Stanton but if there is one team in Major League Baseball to never count out signing a big name, it's the Yankees.
