The New York Yankees are preparing for the beginning of Spring Training, but there's still plenty of rumors and news to address before the on-field work begins in earnest. Let's recap the biggest news tidbits for today in our Yankees News & Rumors Roundup For February 14th.
Bryce Harper Speculation
He may have three years until he hits the free agency market in the winter of 2018, but Washington Nationals superstar and 2015 NL MVP Bryce Harper is already the subject of a litany of rumors.
One team that's been mentioned as a favorite for Harper is the Yankees, and it's becoming more apparent as the months go on that the team is angling for a huge splash in the 2019 free agency market -- with the biggest fish in their sights being Harper.
Our very own Heather Murphy has detailed her three reasons why the Yankees are the prohibitive favorites to land the once-in-a-generation talent, citing the team's soon-to-diminish payroll and sway as a brand as the recruiting tools that'll put the team over the top.
It's all very convincing, and worth debating as the Yankees continue to set things up for a major play in 2019.
Good News On Tanaka
The Yankees have some promising news to work with, as starting pitcher Masahiro Tanaka suffered no setbacks Sunday in his first mound session since arthroscopic surgery back in October to remove a bone spur in his throwing elbow.
"He didn't try to push it too much, but it was good," pitching coach Larry Rothschild said, via the Associated Press. "He wasn't mid-season form, but he was where he should be. His arm worked well. Didn't look like there were any problems. Today he felt good, which was more important."
Tanaka's injury reportedly first became a problem back in Japan before he came to the Yankees in 2014.
