Just days after the New York Yankees placed both Masahiro Tanaka and CC Sabathia on the disabled list, they have sent right-hander Luis Cessa to the 10-day DL as well with a ribcage issue.
Cessa left his start Monday night against the New York Mets in the fifth inning and said it was manager Joe Girardi's decision to take him out of the game.
“When I was facing (Rene) Rivera in the fifth I felt a little bit of discomfort, but I thought I could keep pitching,” Cessa said through an interpreter. “But (Joe) Girardi came out and told me, ‘Let me take you out. I don’t want you to do something wrong mechanically to get hurt even more.’”
Cessa was recalled from Triple-A Scranton earlier this week to help provide from pitching depth for those injured starters. Caleb Smith has been recalled from Triple-A to replace him.
Sabathia is set to come off the DL on Saturday, which would have been Cessa's next scheduled start.
Cessa is 0-3 with a 4.75 ERA with 30 strikeouts and a 1.47 WHIP in 10 appearances this season, including five starts.
