For the second time this season, the New York Yankees have placed DH Matt Holliday on the disabled list. The Yankees announced Sunday that Holliday was placed on the 10-day DL, with Garrett Cooper called up from Triple-A to replace him.
Holliday suffered a lower back injury that the Yankees are calling a left lumbar strain. The Yankees hope Holliday is limited to only 10 days on the DL.
"I hope that's all it is," manager Joe Girardi said of Holliday's time on the DL. "Backs are tricky, so you've got treatment, and do what you've got to do."
Holliday is hitting .229 with 16 homers and 51 RBIs in 88 games this year, but has struggled since his first DL stint that ended on July 14th after a viral infection. Since then, Holliday has hit just .136 (11 for 81) with one home run and four RBIs.
Cooper is back up in the majors after being sent down following the Todd Frazier trade. He's hit well in Triple-A, although he only hit .240 when he was in the majors. Girardi said Cooper will see some action at first base, although Chase Headley will remain the everyday starter.

As for the replacement at DH, Girardi said he'll likely use an outfielder or even C Gary Sanchez if he needs a night off from behind the plate.
