The 2017 MLB Draft is Monday and the New York Yankees hold the No. 16 pick this year. With the draft just days away, the rumor mill is abuzz with prospects the Yankees could select in round one. The latest rumored picks are below, with some notes on each player, are below.
1B Nick Pratto (High school, California)
Pratto might be the most mocked player to the Yankees leading up to the draft, including the latest CBS mock draft. The Yankees love their Southern California players (four of their last six) and Pratto fits another bill for the Yankees: high bonus demands. Most teams picking high aren't going to be willing to meet Pratto's demands, which could allow him to slide to the Yankees, just like Blake Rutherford did last year. Pratto is a top-10 talent and one of the best high schools bats in this year's class. With the Yankees willingness to spend, Pratto is a logical fit.
LHP Trevor Rogers (High School, New Mexico)
If Pratto isn't the most mocked player, Rogers probably is. Both the latest FanGraphs Mock Draft and MLB.com has Rogers as the selection. A lanky and tall lefty, Rogers can hit the mid-90s with his fastball. As a bonus, his favorite team is the Yankees. Rogers has the talent to fit the draft slot, but he could be off the board. If Rogers lasts to the Yankees, he could be the pick, but there's a good chance he's off the board.
RP Griffin Canning (UCLA)
The third option is Griffin Canning, who seems like the fall-back option if the first two players are off the board. A potential mid-rotation starter, Canning can hit the mid-90s with his fastball, just like Rogers. He was the Friday ace for the Bruins and severed that role very well. He might not have the sheer upside the high schools players do, but Canning has plenty of potential.
